For years now I have updated, expanded, and fixed everything there is to a cleaning site (client protected).  Here is a list of the kind of things that really worked for the site:

The usual:

  • Titles
  • Descriptions
  • Schema
  • Content
  • URL structuring
  • Alt images
  • blah, blah, blah

The unusual:

  • Built and structured content around keywords, but not strictly around keywords.  I would build several supporting pages that had little to do with rankings, not even long tail keywords.  These “extra-information-pages”, as I liked to call them gave me the edge.
  • SILOs, straight out of Bruce Clay’s book.
  • HTML Sitemap–I spent quite a lot of time on this, and it helped me to develop a template for future clients.  I always see a bump in rankings with this.  A big thing you want to do is structure links under clear headers…it’s not easy!
